Modalities

These are the modalities our therapists offer.

Psychodynamic therapy

Psychodynamic therapy helps you discover and explore how your unconscious mind affects your actions. It does this by examining your emotions, thought patterns and relationships. You might benefit from psychodynamic therapy if you suffer from depression or anxiety, battle with an eating disorder, or struggle with substance abuse.

Behavioural therapy

In behavioural therapy, you explore how your past impacts certain behaviours you display in the present and helps you change how you react to certain things in life. It also assists in exploring situations and patterns that cause you distress. You might benefit from behavioural therapy if you struggle with severe anxiety or phobias, believe you have OCD, or suffer from ADHD or other behavioural disorders.

Humanistic therapy

Humanistic therapy is about helping you to identify your true self in order to live a fulfilled life. Your therapist will come from a place of complete acceptance and guide you on a journey of self-discovery to identify why and how you make your choices in life and what your needs are. You might benefit from Humanistic therapy if you suffer from low self-esteem or depression, experienced trauma, have relationship issues or struggle with substance abuse.

Frequently asked questions about our therapy service

All therapeutic approaches are based on the therapeutic relationship that you build with your counsellor. Many factors will contribute to building this trusting relationship, only one of which is the specific theoretical approach of the therapist. Our belief at Choose Therapy is that if you feel able to develop a meaningful, honest and trusting relationship with your therapist, you will have found a combination of factors that work well for you. Choose Therapy does not suggest or promote one school of thought over another as each case will be unique, but you can find a high-level description of some of the major modalities here (coming soon), to help you explore further which you initially feel most drawn to.

Choosing a therapist is a very personal experience. Initially, the Choose Therapy team will help match you to a selection of potential counsellors given the information in your inital assessment sesssion. We suggest that you review the counsellor’s profiles, areas of interest and reflect on to whom you feel initially drawn. The only way to decide for sure if the fit feels right for you is to arrange a session. After the first session with a counsellor, you may have a sense of whether the fit is right for you, or not. If you’d like to change therapists, our team can help support you to find a more suitable match.

Once you have booked your first therapy session, your therapist will contact you to confirm the appointment and answer any practical questions in advance of a session. Your counsellor can only discuss issues and material without the boundaries of a session, and this will be the first session will be the first opportunity to discuss the details of your particular issues, your goals for therapy and to discuss in the details of how you wish to work together.

Choose Therapy provides open ended counselling. This means that there is no limit on the maximum or minimum number of sessions you can have with your counsellor. Typically, clients and therapists will regularly review the progress of their sessions together throughout the duration of the work and decide when it’s time for an ending. Ultimately, sessions can be brought to a close by a client at any time with a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice. Typically, most clients will attend at least 6 to 12 sessions, if they have a specific issue to explore, but it is not unusual to continue well beyond this.

If you can’t make a session for any other reason than a hospital appointment, then you can give your therapist advanced notice that you will be taking a holiday session. Correctly booked holiday sessions will not be charged for. Clients are asked to take no more than 4 sessions of holiday in any calendar year. We also require at least 2 weeks’ notice of any holidays. Unfortunately, any missed sessions that are not booked as holiday at least 2 weeks in advance, will be counted as unattended sessions and will incur the regular charge.
