All of our therapists have undergone additional training to effectively and safely conduct counselling sessions online.
Choose Therapy has adopted the BACP ethical framework and our therapists adhere to the code of ethics and practice of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) or the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy).
All of our counsellors and psychotherapists at Choose Therapy are in their final stages of training.
Supervision sessions are conducted on a regular basis in order to assure the highest standards.
All of our online therapists are £42 for each affordable counselling session.
Working Within Professional Ethical Standards
Our therapists work in accordance with the professional standards and codes of ethics set by either the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) or the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy).
But what does this mean for you?
Professional ethical frameworks are designed to ensure therapy is delivered safely, responsibly, and in your best interests. They provide guidance on how therapists should conduct themselves and maintain high standards of care. This includes commitments to:
- Respecting client confidentiality and privacy
- Working within clear professional boundaries
- Acting with honesty, integrity, and transparency
- Prioritising client wellbeing and safety
- Recognising and managing conflicts of interest
- Undertaking regular supervision and professional development
- Working within the limits of their competence and training
- Treating clients with respect, dignity, and without discrimination
How We Select Our Therapists
We believe affordable therapy should still meet high professional standards. Before joining Choose Therapy, therapists must demonstrate relevant clinical experience, undertake personal therapy as part of their professional development, hold professional insurance, belong to recognised professional bodies, and complete safeguarding and background checks.
As an online therapy provider, we also require additional training in remote counselling to ensure therapists can work effectively and safely in a digital environment.
Combined with regular supervision and ongoing professional development, these standards help ensure clients receive therapy within a safe, ethical, and professionally supported framework.
What Are The Benefits Of Online Counselling?
Many people find conducting therapy sessions online much more convenient. You save the time you would usually need in order to travel to your therapist, and you can simply conduct your weekly therapy session within the comfort of your own home.
Especially through the pandemic, online counselling has become more and more common. Research has established that online counselling is just as effective as in person, face to face counselling.

Book a SessionWhy the Therapeutic Relationship Matters
Research consistently shows that one of the strongest predictors of successful therapy is not a specific technique, but the quality of the relationship between client and therapist, known as the therapeutic alliance.
Feeling comfortable enough to speak openly is how real healing can take place. Whether you’re discussing anxiety, relationship difficulties, low mood, self-esteem, or life transitions, progress is often easier when trust is present. This is why Choose Therapy allows you to work with a therapist of your choosing. Finding the right fit is an important part of the process, and changing therapists does not mean therapy has “failed”. A good therapist wants you to receive the support that works best for you.
If, after your first session, you don’t feel your therapist is the right match, we’ll help you switch to another therapist within our network free of charge.
How We Keep Online Therapy Safe and Confidential
Confidentiality, safety, and professional standards are central to everything we do at Choose Therapy. Our online sessions take place on secure platforms designed to protect your privacy. Information shared during therapy is treated confidentially and managed in line with professional, ethical, and data protection requirements.
Client safety is supported through robust governance and regular clinical supervision, helping therapists maintain high standards of care and continue their professional development.
Safeguarding procedures are also in place to protect clients when concerns about safety or wellbeing arise. While therapy is confidential, appropriate action may be taken where there is a serious risk of harm.
F.A.Q.
Frequently asked questions about our therapy service
All therapeutic approaches are based on the therapeutic relationship that you build with your counsellor. Many factors will contribute to building this trusting relationship, only one of which is the specific theoretical approach of the therapist. Our belief at Choose Therapy is that if you feel able to develop a meaningful, honest and trusting relationship with your therapist, you will have found a combination of factors that work well for you. Choose Therapy does not suggest or promote one school of thought over another as each case will be unique, but you can find a high-level description of some of the major modalities here (coming soon), to help you explore further which you initially feel most drawn to.
Choosing a therapist is a very personal process. At Choose Therapy, we believe it is an important part of the therapeutic journey that you are able to choose the counsellor you would like to work with. Rather than being matched to a therapist, we invite you to explore our counsellors’ profiles, areas of interest, and approaches, and to reflect on who you feel most drawn to.
The best way to know whether a therapeutic relationship feels right is to experience it. After an initial session, you may have a clearer sense of whether the counsellor is a good fit for you. If it doesn’t feel quite right, that’s okay. You are free to choose someone else, and our team is always available to support you in finding a counsellor who feels more suitable.
This freedom of choice is what sets Choose Therapy apart from many other services, and we see it as a vital part of creating a safe, empowering, and effective therapeutic experience.
Once you have booked your first therapy session, your therapist will contact you to confirm the appointment and answer any practical questions in advance of a session. Your counsellor can only discuss issues and material without the boundaries of a session, and this will be the first session will be the first opportunity to discuss the details of your particular issues, your goals for therapy and to discuss in the details of how you wish to work together.
Choose Therapy provides open ended counselling. This means that there is no limit on the maximum or minimum number of sessions you can have with your counsellor. Typically, clients and therapists will regularly review the progress of their sessions together throughout the duration of the work and decide when it’s time for an ending. Ultimately, sessions can be brought to a close by a client at any time with a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice. Typically, most clients will attend at least 6 to 12 sessions, if they have a specific issue to explore, but it is not unusual to continue well beyond this.
If you can’t make a session for any other reason than a hospital appointment, then you can give your therapist advanced notice that you will be taking a holiday session. Correctly booked holiday sessions will not be charged for. Clients are asked to take no more than 4 sessions of holiday in any calendar year. We also require at least 2 weeks’ notice of any holidays. Unfortunately, any missed sessions that are not booked as holiday at least 2 weeks in advance, will be counted as unattended sessions and will incur the regular charge.
Yes, we offer therapy for a range of issues, this can be discussed at the Initial Assessment.
We can only offer therapy on a weekly basis and it must be the same day and time each week.
You must be in the UK for all therapy sessions.
The Initial Assessment and the Therapy sessions are by secure video link.
We can not offer therapy in a car or outside. You must be in a confidential space indoors.
We only offer individual therapy for adults aged 18 and over.
You will prepay for your Initial Assessment and then your 1st Therapy session. Thereafter you will be charged at the end of each session by credit or debit card. We will ask for these to be saved on our secure telemedicine software at the time of booking.
We require 7 days notice to cancel or we will charge for the missed session. When you start with us your therapist will discuss the counselling agreement with you.
We only offer counselling. Please contact your GP if you require an assessment by a psychiatrist.
For a long time, the reality of therapy was pretty rigid: driving to a clinic, sitting in an awkward waiting room, and hoping a neighbour didn’t walk through the door. That’s not really the case anymore.
The way we handle mental health in the UK has evolved, largely thanks to virtual therapy and online based psychotherapy. You’re likely reading this because you need an alternative. Whether the local wait times are too long or the logistics of getting to a clinic feel overwhelming, you’ve arrived at the right spot. Here at Choose Therapy, we understand the fatigue. Finding a connection is personal, and getting the right support in place is often the hardest part.
We want to cut through the noise. This guide isn’t just a list of facts; it’s a look at what actually works, what it costs, and why thousands of people are switching to our platform to manage their mental health.
We should probably address the labels first. The industry uses a lot of names for what we do. You’ll hear people say virtual therapy, online counselling, and web-based psychotherapy interchangeably. They all boil down to one simple concept: getting professional help via the internet instead of a physical office.
This is more than just a video call. It is a professional therapeutic environment; it just happens to be digital. The big difference is that the session takes place wherever you feel most grounded. That might be your office, your bedroom, or even your kitchen.
Choose Therapy was born because we saw a disconnect in the system. We believe technology should make help easier to reach, not colder or more distant. We use secure connections to deliver support straight to you, effectively deleting the stress of travel, parking, and that rigid reception area atmosphere. From the bustle of Manchester to the coast of Cornwall, we ensure you access the exact same level of expertise.
This is the big question everyone asks eventually. Is talking to a screen really the same as being in the room?
Yes. It might be surprising, but the clinical data is solid. When analyzing the effectiveness of online counselling vs in-person support, studies show that for conditions like depression and anxiety, the recovery rates are just as high.
The “magic” of therapy isn’t the room itself. It’s the relationship you build with the person helping you. That bond the therapeutic alliance forms just as well over video. In fact, we see something interesting happening with our clients at Choose Therapy. Because people are in their own homes, wearing their most comfortable clothes, and drinking from their own mugs, they tend to relax faster.
The defences come down quicker.
If you’re prone to social anxiety, walking into a clinic can spike your cortisol before you even sit down. Doing it from home removes that barrier. You can curl up with a blanket or have your pet next to you. It changes the dynamic from “going to the doctor” to simply having a confidential and meaningful conversation about your life.
If you’re Googling the best platforms for online therapy, you’re going to see a mix of huge American corporations and tiny local directories. It’s hard to know who to trust.
Most people want three things: they want it to work, they want it to be safe, and they don’t want it to bankrupt them.
Choose Therapy exists to solve the biggest problem in the UK mental health market right now: the price. We don’t think you should have to choose between paying your rent and looking after your mind.
1. Unmatched Affordability
Private therapy in the UK can easily hit £80 or £100 an hour. That is simply out of reach for most of us. We have stripped back the overheads to offer sessions starting from £36. We do this by working with specially selected early career therapists. It’s an ethical model that keeps costs down while maintaining high standards. We supervise every therapist in house to maintain the highest practice standards.
2. No Waiting Lists
The NHS is an incredible institution, but treatment arcs are short and the waiting lists for mental health support can be heartbreakingly long. Six months? A year? When you’re struggling, you need help now, not next winter.
3. Vetted Professionals
Safety matters. We aren’t a generic marketplace for therapists. Every professional on our platform is vetted and selected and supervised by our trusted team of supervisors. They are all members of professional counselling bodies like the BACP or UKCP or NCPS and they are held to strict ethical codes. You are in safe hands.
Everyone’s struggle looks different. We don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach. Here is how we handle specific needs.
Online Psychotherapist for Anxiety UK
Anxiety has a habit of shrinking your horizons. It tells you it’s risky to go out, or that you’ll embarrass yourself. For many, finding an online psychotherapist for anxiety UK is the perfect workaround. It allows you to engage with the work without having to fight your nerves just to get to the clinic. We use approaches like person centered counselling and CBT to help break those panic cycles from the safety of your own home.
E-Counsellors for Depression
If you are dealing with depression, you know the energy just isn’t there. The routine of commuting and sitting in a waiting room can feel impossible. That is where our online counsellors for depression come in. We cut out the hassle. By removing the need to travel, we make the act of attending therapy far less daunting. We provide a compassionate environment where you can start to heal, without the pressure of a physical journey.
Money is often the elephant in the room. A lot of people ask us: “Does insurance cover online counselling?”
The landscape is changing fast. A few years ago, insurers were hesitant. Now, big providers like Bupa, AXA, and Aviva often recognize web-based psychotherapy as standard medical care, as long as the therapist has the right paperwork (like BACP accreditation).
But here is the thing: many people find they don’t even need to use their insurance. Because our sessions start at £36, it’s comparable to a gym membership or a weekly takeaway. A lot of our clients prefer to just pay as they go. It keeps things private, simple, and means you don’t have to deal with the headache of insurance pre-authorizations or session limits. We keep the pricing transparent because nobody needs financial surprises when they are trying to heal.
Deciding on the Right Path
If you are unsure whether our platform suits your needs, consider these three factors.
- Do you need free support or private continuity? Charities like Mind or Samaritans provide essential, immediate crisis support, but they are often overstretched and cannot guarantee you will speak to the same person twice. If you require consistency—seeing a dedicated professional who builds a long-term understanding of your history—a private service like Choose Therapy is the better option. We bridge the gap between “free but limited” and “private but expensive.”
- How do you prefer to communicate?
Video: Best for those who rely on facial expressions and want to replicate the feeling of being in the room.
3. Who is the therapy for? Adults 18+ We establish this during intake to ensure you are matched not just with a therapist, but with a specialist qualified for your specific life stage.
Searching for terms like “online counselling” or “mental health services” is usually a sign that something needs to change. Admitting that is brave. It’s the first step.
You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through difficult times on your own. Choose Therapy was built because we believe professional help shouldn’t be a luxury item. It should be available to anyone in the UK who needs it, regardless of where they live or what their budget looks like.
We combine the ease of telehealth with serious, professional care. No waiting lists, no hidden fees, just people helping people.
Join the thousands of others who decided to prioritize themselves. Book an initial assessment today and you’ll be able to check out our available therapists and find a time that works for you within a couple of days, not weeks.
Ready to start? Head over to choosetherapy.co.uk and see who is available to talk this week. It might be the best decision you make all year.
We’ve seen the landscape of online therapy in the UK mature into something truly remarkable and sophisticated. In 2026, we no longer view virtual counselling as a secondary option. For millions of us, it has become the gold standard, offering a level of flexibility, privacy, and clinical quality that fits the way we actually live.
At Choose Therapy, our mission is to bridge the gap between you and the support you deserve. We connect you with BACP-registered clinicians through our secure, end-to-end encrypted platform. We’re here to help you navigate life’s heaviest moments, providing expert treatment for:
- Anxiety and Depression: We’ll help you find your feet and regain your balance.
- PTSD and Trauma: We provide safe, digital spaces for recovery.
- Complex Grief: We offer a compassionate hand to hold during your most difficult transitions.
We believe that high-quality mental health support shouldn’t depend on your postcode. By stripping away the traditional hurdles like the stress of a city-centre commute or the limitations of a 9-to-5 clinic we ensure that care is available to you, wherever you are in Britain.
Whether you’re looking for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), or humanistic counselling, we provide a tailored experience that doesn’t just rival face-to-face sessions we believe it often exceeds them.
We’ve designed our platform to be the best online counselling provider in the UK by focusing on what actually matters to your recovery:
- Immediate Access: We don’t believe you should have to wait. We offer rapid online booking options to help you skip the lengthy NHS queues.
- Qualified Professionals
- Total Security: We host your sessions in a private, encrypted digital space because your confidentiality is our absolute priority.
- A Personal Match: We don’t just assign a name to a case. We take the time to find the specific specialist who fits your needs and your personality.
Experience a Higher Standard of Care with Us
For us, modern remote psychotherapy isn’t just about convenience; it’s about delivering the highest tier of clinical care directly to your door (or your screen). If you’ve been searching for top-rated virtual counselling that actually understands the nuances of life in the UK, we’re ready when you are.
In the current market, “top-rated” implies that a platform has undergone extensive auditing. For instance, Choose Therapy maintains a rigorous vetting process. This ensures that every session meets the high standards expected by British patients.
To identify a top-rated service, look for:
- BACP or UKCP Accreditation: This is the gold standard for clinical safety in the UK.
- End-to-End Encryption: Ensuring that your most private conversations remain confidential.
- Specialist Diversity: Access to niche therapists, including those specialising in neurodivergent-friendly care or LGBTQ+ specific support.
Our commitment to these standards is reflected in our reviews where patients consistently rate the ease of our matching system and the expertise of our clinicians as “life-changing.”
The best providers also offer specialised modalities that go beyond general talk therapy. This includes:
- CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy): The gold standard for anxiety and depression management.
By focusing on these evidence-based treatments, Choose Therapy ensures that remote delivery never compromises the clinical outcome.
We believe that the highest-ranked online talk therapy services in the UK are those that successfully bridge the gap between clinical professionalism and human empathy. For us, a high ranking isn’t just a badge, it’s a reflection of our patient retention, our clinical success rates, and the honest feedback you share on independent review platforms.
In 2026, Choose Therapy remains at the top of these rankings. We don’t just “assign” you a therapist; we use a clinical-led assessment to pair you with a professional whose expertise, approach, and personality align perfectly with your specific needs.
We know that trust is the currency of mental health. That’s why our reputation is built on total transparency regarding our fees and our strict “no-waiting-list” policy. In a sector where you may feel at your most vulnerable, we believe that the ability to get started immediately is the most critical factor in providing world-class care.
One of the most significant drivers for seeking private care is the online therapy vs NHS waiting times comparison 2026. While the NHS remains a vital pillar of British society, the demand for mental health services continues to outstrip supply.
Feature | NHS IAPT Services | Choose Therapy (Private) |
Waiting Time | 4 to 12 months (avg) | 24 to 48 hours |
Therapist Choice | Assigned by the clinic | Selected by you |
Session Limit | Often capped at 6–12 | No limit; as long as needed |
Modality Access | Primarily CBT | Full range (Humanistic, etc.) |
Flexibility | Set times; often during work hours | Evening and weekend availability |
For many, the cost of waiting a year for treatment is higher than the financial cost of private sessions. At Choose Therapy, we focus on speed and access advantage, allowing patients to intervene early before a mental health struggle becomes a crisis.
If you have been seeing a therapist in person and are wondering how to switch from face-to-face to digital therapy in the UK, the process is simpler than you might think.
Many patients find that as their lives become busier, the commitment of traveling to an office becomes a barrier to consistency. To make the switch:
- Assess Your Comfort: Most people find that after 10 minutes of a video session, the “digital” aspect fades away and the human connection takes over.
- Verify the Platform: Ensure the new service uses a secure, dedicated health platform rather than generic software like Skype or Zoom.
- Consultation: At Choose Therapy, we offer a brief introductory call to help you get comfortable with the technology and the therapist before committing to a full session.
Switching often leads to better attendance rates because “bad weather” or “train strikes” are no longer valid reasons to miss a vital session.
This is a fundamental question: Are you looking for free NHS-funded options or private paid therapy? Your answer will dictate your path of care.
- Choose NHS-Funded if: You have a limited budget and your symptoms are manageable in the short term. You can self-refer via the NHS website for IAPT services.
- Choose Private (Choose Therapy) if: You require immediate help, you want to choose your specific therapist, or you need specialised treatment that may be harder to access on a local NHS trust.
Private care through Choose Therapy offers a level of bespoke attention that is simply not possible in the overstretched public sector. We provide clear, upfront pricing with no hidden costs, making private therapy more accessible than ever before.
In a crowded market, Choose Therapy offers an easy way to find and book therapy online, we are a dedicated mental health organisation.
- BACP/UKCP Vetting: We perform the background checks so you don’t have to.
- Integrated Technology: Our platform is purpose-built for therapy, with features that support the clinical process.
- Flexibility: We offer sessions from 7 am to 10 pm, accommodating even the busiest schedules.
- Privacy-First: Your data and your sessions are protected by industry-leading security.
By focusing on these core values, Choose Therapy ensures that every patient feels heard, supported, and respected from the very first click.
11. 7 Reasons to Choose Virtual Support Over Traditional Methods
- Unrivalled Convenience: Therapy fits around your life, not the other way around.
- Broadest Specialist Access: You are not limited to therapists in your postcode.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Save on travel and childcare costs associated with in-person visits.
- Enhanced Comfort: Discuss sensitive topics from your own “safe space” at home.
- Improved Consistency: Fewer missed appointments lead to faster recovery times.
- Better Privacy: No chance of bumping into someone you know in a waiting room.
- Digital Tools: Access to session recordings, worksheets, and resources at your fingertips.
Yes. Studies consistently show that for most conditions, including anxiety and depression, the outcomes of online therapy are equal to in-person sessions.
All therapists at Choose Therapy are registered with the BACP or UKCP. You can also verify their individual registration numbers on the official BACP/UKCP registers.
