Experiencing frequent or regular anxiety can have a major impact on our mental health and well-being. It can be life limiting, emotionally distressing and can impact many areas of our lives. Anxiety is the most common mental health concern in the UK, as well as a common mental health concern around the world. In the UK, 1 in 6 adults report suffering from anxiety (2014), and since the start of the pandemic in 2020 these figures have risen dramatically with almost half of the adult population now reporting symptoms of anxiety.
How Do I Know If I Have Anxiety?
The symptoms of anxiety can appear suddenly, or gradually build over time. An increase in anxiety could be triggered by one or multiple life events or situations, or the reason for the onset might not be obvious. For many people, anxious thoughts and patterns gradually develop over time and only become obvious once the impact of those symptoms has become significant.
If you are experiencing a combination of the following psychological or physical symptoms, you might be suffering from anxiety. The symptoms of anxiety can be psychological, such as; restlessness, irritability, feeling constantly “on edge”, difficulty concentrating and a constant sense of fear, panic or dread.
The symptoms of anxiety can also be physiological, such as; dizziness, tiredness, heart palpitations, muscle aches & tension, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, headaches and insomnia.
If you are suffering from a combination of these symptoms and would like to speak to a therapist about counselling for anxiety, you can book an initial assessment with one of our assessors.
Why Am I Anxious?
Anxiety is rooted in our primal flight or fight response. In modern life this response can become overloaded. When we feel like there is some kind of threat or danger in the future, we often start to think about how to solve it or limit it as a possibility. In cases of anxious thought, this often leads to an increased sense of the problem and the feelings of worry, fear or panic. This anxious feeling can gradually increase and become overwhelming.
Although we all experience stress in response to certain life situations, anxiety becomes a problem when the feelings become disproportionate or regular. The impact of anxiety is not only in the moment of anxiety, which can be emotionally difficult, but also in how it can take away our own agency or choice, negatively impact our behaviour and limit our possibilities.
How counselling can help with anxiety
A counsellor will work with you to explore and understand what is driving your anxiety. Some therapies such a CBT focus on short term solutions to specific anxieties by encouraging you to proactively modify the thinking patterns that are causing anxiety. Other modalities, such as the humanistic and psychodynamic or integrative modalities look to work in a more holistic way and at greater depth. This type of talking therapy helps you to explore the web of thoughts, feelings and experiences that are the root cause of your anxieties. This process of self discovery and understanding can open up new possibilities for relating to the world and help create meaningful change in your experience of anxiety. Counselling can also offer management strategies such as mindfulness or breathing exercises that can help manage acute periods of anxiety. Find a counsellor with an approach that suits you by checking out our therapists.
